History of USAI
The University pool was started in the winter of 1960 by a group of Rutgers
University faculty and senior level administrators. After looking at vacant campus
land, they chose the present site because it was quiet and surrounded by trees.
The University Swimming Association, Inc. (USAI) leased the land from the
University and built the pool with money raised by selling bonds to members. This
practice continues today as a way to maintain the security fund. USAI is an
independent non-profit organization and has no legal affiliation with Rutgers. It
relies on Membership and other income to operate each year.

NEW for 2026 Season
We are happy to announce that USAI has room for its Rutgers Affiliates as well as
those in the general community. In other words, you do NOT need a Rutgers
connection to join. There will now be two membership and fee categories:
Rutgers Membership—for faculty, staff, or alumni (or retired) at Rutgers or the
Theological Seminary in New Brunswick. The rates are slightly lower than
General.
General Membership—for anyone without Rutgers Affiliation
Along with the membership fees there are one -time costs of Initiation Fee ($100) and a Bond ($250, refundable when ending membership). These are standard for private summer swim clubs.
If you belonged to the pool in past and left membership, you can rejoin. The
initiation fee is waived, but a new bond must be posted.
Past Sponsored Seasonal members will now join under General Membership and
will have the initiation fee waived.

New members must provide the following to the Membership Chair:
Family memberships include adult partners, spouses, and children residing in your home
For single parents, this includes two or more dependent children.
- Family - $925
- Family (Rutgers affiliate) $850
Couple memberships include Spouse or Domestic Partner, or Single parent with one dependent child, or Couples with new first baby under one year old.
- Couple - $690
- Couple (Rutgers affiliate) - $630
Individual membership is the Bondholder
- Individual - $490
- Individual (Rutgers affiliate) - $430
If you are uncertain of your status or category, contact the Membership Chair to review your circumstances.
When you are notified of your approval, you will be provided with a bond number. This is your ID number that you will use to enter the pool at the check in desk. Make sure all family members know the number. If you need to provide a name at the desk, use the name of the affiliate.
